*Though glass is a highly recyclable material, very small pieces generally cannot be processed by residential recycling programs.

**Post-consumer recycled plastic guarantees that the materials in the packaging have been through the recycling system at least once, thus given a longer lifecycle and guaranteeing a more sustainable footprint. However, these materials require specialized industrial processing, and post-consumer recycled plastic cannot be recycled again through residential programs.

What to Know About Recyling Beauty Packaging

Recycling at Home

Residential municipal recycling programs are an important part of the packaging ecosystem, but have limits that are not as widely known.

Sorting machines for materials like glass, metal and plastic have limits on what can be processed, and small packaging—like the petite components used for most makeup--are too small to be recycled, even if they are made from recyclable materials. Most municipalities require items to be at least as large as a yogurt cup to be recycled, or greater than 2 inches on more than one side.

"Wish-cycling"—putting items into residential recycling bins that are nonrecyclable—can actually have a negative impact on recyclability, and prevent materials batches that might otherwise be recycled from being appropriately processed.

Please make sure to only place items that can be recycled into your recyling bins.
