Growing up in Southern California, the Ramos Sisters first encountered carmine growing wild in clusters on cacti and were fascinated by its incredible vibrancy. Carmine was a source of early inspiration in creating Rituel de Fille as a remarkable, storied example of how singularly fascinating natural ingredients can be.

Carmine is an extraordinary pigment of incredible beauty, and its rich range of color cannot be matched by other dyes. Made from the cochineal insect, it has been worn for centuries as a stunning natural cosmetic. Carmine is uniquely safe for both the lips and eyes, and offers color so concentrated it must be seen in person to be experienced fully.

Carmine expresses a range of rich tones from blood reds to magentas to purples, and this Color Set brings together two shades that express its achingly beautiful color spectrum. Both shades use just carmine to create their color:

Darkest Deeds: An impossibly vibrant, stunningly rich inky purple.

Written in Blood: A deeply saturated, universally flattering blood red.

Finish: Semi-matte

Aroma: Lavender

Forbidden Lipstick: An intensely saturated, rich and luxuriant lipstick carefully crafted to reveal bold, daring color and impart enduring moisture.

About Carmine Pigment:

Cochineal carmine is native to Central and South America. It was prized by Aztec and Incan cultures and was one of the very first treasures brought by the Spanish back to the Old World. Carmine has been worn by women for centuries—including Cleopatra, who used kermes carmine crushed in beeswax to create her iconic red lip.

Because of its rarity, carmine is vastly more expensive than synthetic coal and petroleum-based colorants used in most cosmetics. It is a true luxury of incredible beauty.

Early modern production of carmine was sparked in Peru as an effort to stimulate the economy with traditional natural resources, with cochineal bringing farmers similar rates as coca and therefore offering them a viable alternative. The areas where cochineal is harvested supports local economies and education, and those areas are scattered across Peru to ensure sustained growth.
